On migrating cells and gene mutations

Basic research in Austria with gases from Westfalen

Just outside Vienna, in Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria, is one of Europe's most important research locations: scientists in over 80 research groups at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) work on questions in the fields of mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics and computer science in a multi- and interdisciplinary way. Westfalen Austria has been a supplier to ISTA since the research facility was founded in 2009.

From Secudur pharmaceutical gases, helium and hydrogen to nitrogen – the researchers at ISTA make full use of Westfalen's industrial gases unit's product range for their tests and experiments. From the influence of gene mutations on diseases or the paths that some cells take through the human body – the basic research conducted here is often reflected in our everyday lives years later in the form of a new therapy or a new product.

“Our products are used at ISTA for a wide range of research projects. Our goal is to provide the right solution for each project,” says Christian Kollenc, Managing Director of Westfalen Austria. To achieve this, Westfalen's employees are always available to the ISTA, even at weekends and on public holidays. ‘As a supplier, we have always maintained a good and close relationship with the people in charge at ISTA since we started working together,’ emphasizes Kollenc.

“Westfalen has been an important and valued partner for us for many years,” explains Matthias Nowak, manager of the institute's Lab Support Facility. ”The reliable supply of technical gases to the campus is of great importance for scientific operations. We have always been able to rely on Westfalen completely - even in problematic or unusual situations. We look forward to continuing our cooperation.”

During a visit to the site, Westfalen CEO Dr. Thomas Perkmann explained: “The researchers here are making an important contribution to basic research. Without their work, many other scientific findings would not be possible. Seeing how our products contribute to this research work makes you proud in a way. This makes it all the more important to deliver exactly the quality requested at exactly the right time so that test setups and experiments are not jeopardized.”
