Getting young people interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) – that is the aim of the education initiative that Westfalen launched for schools in Münster and the surrounding area last year to mark the company's 100th anniversary. After the first 100 days, the company can report a positive initial result: in this short time, more than 30 funding requests have already been processed and around 50,000 euros in funding has been provided. In total, the group of companies provides 100,000 euros each year to promote the expansion of STEM teaching in schools.
The money is used by local schools, among other things, to purchase modern teaching and learning materials that enable students to experience hands-on learning. The Westfalen Education Fund has also already financed excursions to out-of-school places of learning that would not have been possible without external funding. Westfalen is working together with schools and the city of Münster itself on the education initiative, as well as with the Münster University of Applied Sciences (Department of Energy/Building/Environment), with which an additional cooperation agreement has been concluded.
“We are very pleased about the high demand for funding, as it shows that we can provide practical and unbureaucratic help in making science teaching more attractive,” emphasizes Jesko von Stechow, CFO of Westfalen. “Our fundamental motivation is to improve the situation in the STEM field so that students have easier access to science – and we as a society will hopefully end up with more young people studying science,” explains the Westfalen board member, outlining the company's reasons for setting up the educational initiative.
In addition to financing teaching materials and excursions, the educational initiative also plans to hold a competition of ideas for the 2024/25 school year. “We want to offer students the opportunity to express their innovative potential in a creative and competitive setting,” explains Tobias Mateina-Noll, Cooperation Manager Education and contact person for the Westfalen Education Initiative: ”This creates additional motivation – which is ultimately rewarded with attractive prizes.”
Interested schools, teachers and educational institutions are invited to contact bildung(at)westfalen.com to collaborate. Further information is also available at www.westfalen.com.
Initial feedback on Westfalen's education initiative
Hendrik Snethkamp, headmaster of the Ratsgymnasium Münster:
“Thanks to the generous financial support from Westfalen, the measurement technology at the Ratsgymnasium Münster is once again state of the art in the STEM field since the end of 2023. An investment that became necessary due to the introduction of iPads for the students."
Dr. Melanie Klein-Bösing, STEM coordinator at the Paulinum Grammar School in Münster:
“Having a personal point of contact makes working together very attractive. Furthermore, Westfalen's generous donation to our STEM department was not only very helpful for us, but also really pleasantly uncomplicated."
Stefan Feldkötter, STEM coordinator at the Mathilde-Anneke-Gesamtschule Münster:
“Westfalen's education initiative is new, modern and diverse. Thanks to the education fund, our year 9 students have had the opportunity to visit the Energy Park in Saerbeck. It is worth highlighting that the schools are involved in the planning and design of the competition. We hope that this will be a motivating project for our students, which can also be incorporated into regular lessons.”
