One of the main customers for the more climate-friendly biofuel will be food wholesaler EGV AG. The Unna-based company has entered into a long-term partnership with Westfalen to ensure more environmentally friendly delivery logistics. In future, EGV will increasingly supply large consumers and catering customers in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony with bio-CNG-powered vehicles, including from Herford.
Last year, the Westfalen Group opened its first bio-CNG filling station for commercial vehicles in Coesfeld. At the Westfalen station in Herford, the range of alternative fuels is now being expanded to include bio-CNG in addition to bio-LNG and electric mobility. “Our cooperation with EGV is a good basis for making local delivery logistics more climate-friendly,” emphasizes Dr. Thomas Perkmann, CEO of the Westfalen Group. “Bio-CNG is particularly suitable for small and medium-sized commercial vehicle fleets in local, regional, and distribution transport.”
The alternative fuel used in Herford is obtained exclusively from waste and residual materials and can thus reduce CO2 emissions by up to 100 percent compared to diesel. In addition to low particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions, the major environmental benefit of using bio-CNG is that the production of bio-CNG absorbs almost the same amount of CO2 that the vehicle emits during combustion. This cycle keeps the total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere constant without increasing it.
This drive technology is not new to EGV AG. The Unna-based company has been using CNG drives in the majority of its vehicle fleet since 2018 and plans to expand this share in the future. Based on this experience with drive energy, Sven Schaffer, Chief Logistics Officer at EGV AG, is also aware of its potential for the environment: “By using bio-CNG as fuel for our truck fleet, we save CO2 with every kilometer we drive. Reliable and environmentally friendly logistics are important to us. With bio-CNG, we have found a suitable solution for this.”
The economy also benefits
Depending on the model, CNG-powered vehicles have a range of up to 800 kilometers and run up to 50 percent quieter than conventional diesel vehicles. In addition to the environmental benefits, local production of biogas means that fuel prices fluctuate only slightly, which also ensures that CNG vehicles will remain economical to operate in the long term.
Bio-CNG soon also in Oelde
The Westfalen Group will soon be opening another bio-CNG filling station specifically for commercial vehicles in Oelde. At the Westfalen filling station (In der Geist 110), the CNG capacity will be increased and the existing filling facility for passenger cars will be expanded to include a truck fuel pump with sufficient maneuvering space.
